Guyana

This project has been postponed indefinitely. We will resume it as soon as we can.

Rupununi is a region in the Guyanese Amazon on the border with Brazil. Due to its isolation, it is often overlooked by aid organisations and development agencies. Our work will ensure a new era of growth and prosperity in the region through cooperation with local Indigenous communities and non-profit organisations. Our primary partner is the Nations School in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown.

Girls Write the Future is a strong believer in the role of youth in changing society. That’s why we’ve chosen to support Youth Can Move the World, a youth leadership and entrepreneurship pilot programme offered by our friends at the Bina Hill Training Institute. Youth from across Rupununi, mostly girls aged 16-20, attend this programme to learn about important issues like environmental protection, mental health, human rights and the need for personal and community transformation.

To help relieve poverty in Rupununi, we are facilitating the expansion and development of YCMW by offering entrepreneurship programmes across the region. These programmes focus on creating and managing sustainable, small-scale businesses, with the aim of empowering Indigenous youth to start independent, income-generating projects.

We are also providing training for local youth to harness modern technology to support local conservation efforts, complementing and expanding Bina Hill’s current environmental management programmes.

This project was postponed at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We plan to get back to work as soon as possible.
