Proving Your Status
To be a Girls Write the Future scholar, you must submit valid documentation proving your First Nations, Inuit or Métis status.
If you are part of a First Nations community, please provide a valid “Certificate of Indian Status” (that is, a status card) or a proof of citizenship, membership or registration issued by:
The Registrar of the federal government’s Indian Register,
A Band (as defined in the Indian Act and recognized by the Federal Government) with control of its membership.
If you are Inuit, please provide a valid “Certificate of Indian Status” (a status card) or a proof of citizenship, membership or registration issued by an Inuit organization recognized by the federal government or by the government of a Territory (i.e. Nunavut, NWT, Yukon).
If you are Métis, please submit a valid citizenship, membership, registration or enrolment card issued by a Métis organization that is a member of the Métis National Council or otherwise recognized by the federal government.
If you are Non-Status (you identify as Indigenous but are not on the federal government’s Indian Register), please submit a copy of the front and back of your parent or parents’ proof of status (as required above) as well as a scanned copy of your long-form birth certificate. The birth certificate should list your name, that of your Indigenous parent(s) and the link between you. If both of your parents are Indigenous, please include both their status cards.
